And in stark contrast

Just as real scientists tend to caution (see previous post), the enemies of science are always absolutely certain they are right. Take the global warming deniers. They don’t know whether the world is warming up, and if it is they certainly don’t know why. But there is one thing they do know. It absolutely, positively cannot be because humans are influencing the climate. Oh no. Unless of course warming is good – then it could easily be human activity.

You can see this attitude on display tomorrow in Sydney if you have a very weak intellect or a very strong stomach. Just check out the speech titles. David Evans wants to know if cliamte scientists – tens of thousands of them – are corrupt. Yes every last one. Joanna Nova calls scientists witchdoctors, and will speak on how to defeat them.

I suspect some readers (if I had any) would think I was overdoing the rhetoric talking about the enemies of science. Not exactly in the spirit of scientific caution is it? Yet here Nova, who claims to be a science communicator (and has the same qualification to that effect I have) is talking about “defeating” the virtually every climatologist on the planet, along with tens of thousands of meteorologists, statesticians, astronomers, geologists, botanists and zoologists whose research lines have ended up producing supporting evidence for Anthropogenic Global Warming. How else am I supposed to describe these people.

About Stephen Luntz

I am a science journalist, specialising in Australian and New Zealand research across all fields of science. My book, Forensics, Fossils and Fruitbats: A Field Guide to Australian Scientists is out now through CSIRO Publishing. I am also a professional returning officer for non-government organisations. I'm very politically active, but generally try to restrict this blog to scientific matters.
